Construction Begins on Landmark Wildlife Crossing

The first layers of soil were placed this week on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the 101 Freeway, marking a key step in reconnecting critical wildlife habitats. Governor Gavin Newsom called the moment a move toward “reconnecting wildlife with habitat that’s been divided for generations.”

The $92 million project will create a natural passage for mountain lions, deer, bobcats, and pollinators between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills. Once soil placement is finished, around 5,000 native plants will be installed starting in May, supporting the broader ecological restoration of 12 surrounding acres.

The bridge spans 210 feet across 10 lanes of traffic, with full project completion expected by 2026. Learn more at: 101wildlifecrossing.org

Topanga Canyon Boulevard Faces Extended Closure After Storm Damage

Topanga Canyon Boulevard remains largely closed after severe storm damage, and full repairs may take several more months, according to Caltrans officials. Crews have carved out a one-lane detour through the most heavily damaged area, located about two miles north of Pacific Coast Highway, prioritizing essential travel such as school buses.

“There are about nine areas with landslides and three spots where new retaining walls are needed,” said Caltrans spokeswoman Lauren Wonder. Crews aim to clear debris and restore limited two-way traffic within the next two to three months, although full roadway restoration will take longer.

Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and monitor local updates as repair work continues.

Malibu Breaks Ground on New Permanent Skatepark

Malibu officially broke ground on its long-awaited permanent skatepark at Malibu Bluffs Park, a major project years in the making.

The 12,500-square-foot facility will feature stairs, rails, quarter pipes, a flow bowl, spines, and waterfalls — designed for skaters of all ages and skill levels. Completion is expected this fall.

"This skate park is more than just a recreational facility — it will be a gathering place that will foster community, promote healthy lifestyles, and embrace Malibu’s deep-rooted skate culture," said Mayor Doug Stewart.

The design, led by California Skateparks, was shaped by public input gathered through community meetings in 2020 and 2021. Construction is being handled by C.S. Legacy Construction under a $4.1 million contract approved by the City Council. The temporary skatepark will remain open until the new facility is ready. City staff are also preparing naming proposals, inviting the community to help finalize the park's identity.

A Rare Chance to Upgrade Malibu's Wastewater System

Malibu is approaching what city leaders are calling a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to overhaul its wastewater infrastructure. For decades, Malibu has relied heavily on individual septic systems, especially in the Civic Center area, leading to concerns over groundwater contamination and coastal water quality. Now, with funding support and regulatory momentum behind it, Malibu is moving forward with the expansion of its Civic Center Water Treatment Facility. The project is seen as a critical step toward protecting the city’s environment for future generations, improving public health, and preserving the beauty of Malibu’s beaches and waterways. According to officials, success will depend not only on engineering but also on the community’s willingness to invest in this long-overdue upgrade.
