The Malibu Colony is an affluent neighborhood known for its picturesque beachside homes. May Rindge, daughter of Malibu Ranch owner, also known as the "Last Californian" Frederick H. Rindge, created it in the 1920s. May Rindge, after inheriting the land from her father, intended to develop an artistic and luxurious haven for the Hollywood elite.
Soon stars rapidly discovered the tranquility and beauty of the Malibu Colony and rushed there to get away from the city. May Rindge dreamed of creating an idyllic neighborhood where its residents could live in privacy, luxury, and scenic beauty.
May Rindge started developing the region with the aid of architect Myron Hunt, who created a distinctive architectural style that fused Spanish, Mediterranean, and Moorish styles.
The outcome was a particular type of houses that were both attractive and very practical, with open floor plans and large windows framing ocean vistas.
Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin were just a few of the early Hollywood A-listers to settle in the Malibu Colony. Soon, celebrities from all over the globe began to flock to the neighborhood and construct their own mansions, turning it into a center of glitz, glamor, art, and culture.
The Colony has seen its share of ups and downs throughout the years. In the 1930’s the Malibu Pier was washed away in a storm resulting in economic setbacks for real estate investment within the area. However, the Colony had a resurgence in the 1940s and 1950s, when new mansions were erected as Hollywood stars took an interest in the region again with a booming Hollywood film renaissance.
Properties in the Malibu Colony still fetch multimillion-dollar prices because of the area's continued exclusivity and popularity. Beautiful, iconic residences with breathtaking Pacific Ocean views and proximity to some of the world's top beaches can be found here. Residents may walk to high-end restaurants, designer boutiques, and enjoy world class entertainment in their free time here. The high level of quality of life here has garnered the area a reputation for being on of the best places to live in the world.
