Welcome to 6728 Wildlife Rd. Malibu, CA. Some homes are designed to impress, but the truly special ones are built to be lived in—to hold laughter, late-night conversations, and the quiet comfort of everyday moments. This architectual Point Dume masterpiece in Malibu's most coveted neighborhood is one of those rare places. Designed with intention and shaped by years of family memories, it’s been a backdrop for beachside bonfires, lively dinners by the fire, and peaceful mornings spent watching the light shift over the Santa Monica Mountains. For Dominic and Jennifer, this home has been more than a residence—it’s been the heart of their family’s journey. We asked them to share some of the moments that made this home so special to them, offering a glimpse of the life waiting to be lived here. See the full listing here.
What drew you to this home when you first bought it?
Dominic: We didn’t buy the present residence (the one that’s for sale). We built it. It was designed by Lake Flato in San Antonio; Jennifer, who is also an architect, worked closely with Ted Flato and his team in the design, including design changes during construction. We knew the design presented a challenge, in that our children would be young adults not many years after we moved there. The challenge was to build a house that was not too big (for when they were away, including after they had established their adult lives), but was big enough when they all came back. I think Ted’s design does a very good job harmonizing their competing goals, with the collateral benefit of giving Jennifer and I a great deal privacy and our children as well.
What drew you to this home when you first bought it?
Jennifer: My happiest memories are when the kids are around with their friends, going back and forth from the beach, hanging out in the pool and by the fire pit as it gets to be night.
Dominic: A favorite memory of the house is a memory of Little Dume Beach. The property comes with deeded beach rights to Little Dume. The gate to the beach is a five minute walk. We had a beach bonfire birthday party for our younger daughter when she turned fourteen. We literally had the beach to ourselves and could see down the coast 25 miles to jets taking off from LAX, their lights climbing and banking over the ocean. I thought, here we are, having a bonfire by ourselves on a private beach 25 miles from second largest metropolitan area in the country. It is a wonderful amenity to share with your children and friends.
What was your favorite way to spend time in this home?
Jennifer: This is a total inside/outside house. I love having the doors open and moving between indoor and outdoor spaces. I love reading in the chairs on the porch, cooking in the kitchen, hanging outside whlie the fire is going.
Dominic: Grilling at our wood-fired outdoor Argentine grill. Jennifer and I are both pretty fair cooks. I’m the grill cook. Building the fire, the sizzle of the meat or fish or vegetables hitting the grill, wheeling up the grill after the grilling is done and throwing a few more pieces of firewood on the embers to have a blazing fire accompany your dinner, with the smell of the fire in the air and a glass of vino in your hand. It’s not paradise but it’s in that direction.
Is there a particular spot in the house where you found yourself spending the most time? Why?
Jennifer: Of course, a lot of time spent in the kitchen, which is airy and light and spacious and we like to cook. But also a lot in the living room -- which is unusual, sometimes living rooms are kind of reserved for formal occasions. But this one is very comfortable, a great place to read alone, or sit and chat with guests, observe what is going on outside. We use this space a lot.
Dominic: The great room in the pavilion. Either reading near the fireplace or having dinner at the table. I have that glass office cantilevered off the garage but I also enjoy working at the dining table, either looking at the mountains to the east, at the fire in the fireplace, or the colors of the setting sun to the west.
What's something unique about the house that people wouldn’t notice at first?
Dominic: The reading loft. It gives perspectives like none I’ve seen and is a great place to read.
Jennifer: I think it's great because it has very appealing public spaces that draw people (i.e. kids) out of their rooms (tennis court, sports court, pool/jacuzzi, outdoor seating), but also great privacy (each room has access to private outdoor space). This "dual feature" is great because I feel like we get a lot of quality group time but everyone has a quiet place to retreat. ALSO the house has a lot of jasmine plants, which you don't notice now because it's winter but the smell of jasmine in the spring and summer is amazing.
Was there ever a moment in this house that felt particularly magic to you?
Dominic: About a half-hour before sunset the Santa Monica Mountains to the east are covered with is a rose glow that is pretty close to magical.
Jennifer: Every day at dusk/sunset. the light is incredible over the west sky and on the mountains to the northeast. The house is gorgeous at this hour.
Do you have a favorite local spot you loved visiting from there?
Dominic: Walk from Little Dume beach at low tide, the length of Big Dume Beach, the stairs to Big Dume Nature Reserve, then to the viewing platform with 270 degrees of the Pacific.
Jennifer: Little Dume and the top of the headlands.
What kind of person or family do you think would love this home as much as you did?
Dominic: A family having a good collection of art (the house shows art wonderfully), who are active and can take advantage of the clay tennis court, lap pool, basketball/pickleball sports court, outdoor sauna and surfing, stand up paddling on beach walks on Little and Big Dume Beaches. Also a great house for a big book collection and reading books.
Jennifer: For people who are active this place is a dream -- like living in a resort. You can get a workout playing tennis, surfing at Little Dume, running the neighborhood. Come home, get in the jacuzzi or sauna, relax outside with a glass of wine. In particular, for anyone who plays tennis the clay court is a huge plus. It's a very fun surface to play on, and hard to find (even country clubs only usually have a couple).
If this home were a chapter in your life, what would the title be?
Jennifer: Watching my kids have the perfect childhood.
Dominic: A Resort in Paradise.
Was there a part of the home that changed your daily life for the better?
Dominic: In addition to the wood burning Argentine grill, there is a gas grill in the herb garden off the kitchen. We use that two-to-four times a week for everyday dinners for the family. Very convenient and cooking food outside puts you in touch with something good almost every time.
Jennifer: the tennis court!
Did you ever host any unforgettable gatherings or celebrations here?
Jennifer: So many; great dining spaces inside and out; everyone loves coming here, it's just a beautiful space to be in; also many fun group gatherings at the beach for. bonfires with kids and adults, then coming back here for jacuzzi after. We take firewood and smores ingredients and wine in the golf cart down to the gate and then walk from there.
How did this home help shape you or your family’s journey?
Jennifer: My kids grew up in Malibu from birth, and they have always been very attached to it. But living in this house has been like a perfect way to experience Malibu as a family -- bike rides to SunLife or Cafe de La Plage, beach walks at low. tide to Paradise Cove or Sunset. Before we lived here there weren't as many opportunities to do fun group things -- but, playing pickleball, walking to the beach, going on a bike ride out the front door, all of this is very easy on Point Dume unlike almost everywhere else.
