The Brentwood Country Mart is the iconic red-barn shopping center at 26th Street and San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood, open since 1948. It has 24 shops, 6 places to eat and 3 everyday services, from James Perse and goop to Reddi Chick BBQ, a post office, a shoe repair shop and a barbershop. Today people from the homes around it, on both sides of the line between Los Angeles and Santa Monica, come to mail packages, get haircuts and buy local favorite barbecued chicken.

Brentwood Country Mart History: The 1948 Opening
The Brentwood Country Mart opened on November 18, 1948. The Baruch Corporation built it in 6 months to a design by architect Rowland Crawford, the Mart's history page says. Its red wooden buildings, with shops and stalls set around courtyards, were designed to look like early American and English country marketplaces. The Los Angeles Times later called the design a nod to the Farmers Market in the Fairfax District.
The Mart's opening ads billed it as an "innovation in modern merchandising," with a golden ram as its emblem of quality and economy. The Mart threw parties for local children and teenagers, with Santa Claus and, in 1951, Bozo the Clown dressed as the Easter Bunny. Hollywood stars shopped there too. Elizabeth Taylor, Burt Lancaster, Shirley Temple and Gregory Peck were among its regulars.
Today the Mart hosts community events, such as children's storytime in the courtyard and, in season, Friday movie nights, listed on its events page.
Who Owns the Brentwood Country Mart?
JS Rosenfield & Co., the firm of James S. Rosenfield, owns the Brentwood Country Mart's buildings and runs the Mart. The firm calls itself the owner and operator of 3 California country marts.
Rosenfield bought the buildings in 2003, along with a 60-year lease on the land under them, in a deal valued at $30 million. The seller, John E. Anderson, kept the land, the Los Angeles Times reported at the time.
Rosenfield told the Times that more than 40% of the 30,000-square-foot center was empty, and that it had lost its food market, post office and candy store. He had grown up in the area eating barbecued chicken at Reddi Chick. The Mart was "at the worst state it's been in since it was built," he said. "But I love it and I'm going to bring it back."
Today Reddi Chick is still at the Mart, and the Trading Post has a post office. The Mart's history page credits Rosenfield with renovating and restoring the Mart.
