Located along the border of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, Westlake Village is a tranquil, master-planned community nestled in the northern foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. It sits just nine miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and 38 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. Surrounded by rolling hills, oak trees, and natural open space, the neighborhood offers a blend of suburban luxury and scenic beauty—ideal for those seeking both serenity and convenience.

History

Westlake Village rests on land once inhabited by the Chumash Indians over 3,000 years ago. These early inhabitants lived by hunting, gathering, and leaving behind archaeological sites and cave art that hint at their rich and complex society. In 1770, Spanish explorers traveling El Camino Real passed through this area, captivated by its expansive oak forests and fertile plains.

The land later became part of two major Mexican land grants: Rancho El Conejo and Rancho Las Virgenes. In 1881, the area was purchased by the Russell brothers for cattle ranching and became known as Russell Ranch. In 1925, William Randolph Hearst acquired the property, which later became a filming location for classic Hollywood productions like Robin Hood, Tarzan, and Bonanza.

In 1963, the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company, in partnership with Prudential Insurance, purchased the ranch and began developing a visionary “city in the country.” With input from renowned architects and planners, Westlake Village was designed as one of America’s first and most successful master-planned communities. The Los Angeles County portion was incorporated as its own city in 1981.

The Neighborhood

Today, Westlake Village is known for its beautifully maintained neighborhoods, upscale homes, and a sense of peaceful seclusion. Residents enjoy access to gated communities, lakefront properties, and scenic hillside estates. The architectural styles range from Mediterranean villas to contemporary ranch-style homes, with many properties offering views of the surrounding mountains or Westlake Lake.

Nearby

The community is conveniently located near top-tier amenities, including the Westlake Golf Course, Sherwood Country Club, and North Ranch Country Club. A wide variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment options are available at The Promenade and Westlake Plaza. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the area’s proximity to hiking and biking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains and the easy access to Malibu’s beaches.

Westlake Village is also served by excellent public and private schools, making it an ideal location for families. Whether you're looking for natural beauty, suburban comfort, or easy access to both Los Angeles and the coast, Westlake Village offers a lifestyle that is both refined and relaxed.
