In celebration of Porsche's 75th anniversary, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles
is hosting a retrospective titled We Are Porsche. The exhibit will feature a unique collection of 40 vehicles that showcase the German marque's journey to international acclaim and highlight the role played by American collectors in that journey.
The exhibit, which opens on April 16 and runs through April 2024, includes a 1953 550 Spyder raced by Betty Shutes and Ken Miles, Steve McQueen's 1976 911 Turbo, Dan Gurney’s 1962 804 (Porsche’s first and only Formula 1 race car), and a 1973 917/30 Can-Am Spyder driven by Mark Donohue, among others. The exhibit also features a variety of special events and a rotation of vehicles during its tenure.
Visitors to We Are Porsche will learn about the people who have contributed to Porsche's popularity, including Patrick Dempsey, Steve McQueen, Dan Gurney, Hurley Haywood, Ken Miles, Patrick Long, Rod Emory, and Daniel Arsham. The exhibit promises to be a must-see for racing enthusiasts and Porsche lovers alike. Terry L. Karges, Petersen's executive director, expressed his excitement about the museum's involvement in the celebration, stating, "Porsche’s history on and off the track speaks for itself, and we are honored to help them commemorate this milestone."
In addition to the aforementioned vehicles, We Are Porsche will also display other famous models that have appeared in Hollywood blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Cars. Visitors will also learn about "the Spyder Women" (Betty Shutes, Ruth Levy, and Denise McCluggage) who contributed to Porsche's success in the racing world.
The exhibit aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Porsche's legacy, illustrating how it evolved from a small German automaker into an internationally recognized brand. The showcase of vehicles, along with the accompanying stories of their owners and drivers, will give visitors a unique perspective on the marque's achievements over the past 75 years.
We Are Porsche promises to be an exciting and informative exhibit for automotive enthusiasts and the general public alike. The rotation of vehicles during its tenure ensures that visitors can experience something new every time they visit. With a lineup of cars that spans Porsche's illustrious history, this exhibit is a must-see for anyone who appreciates the iconic German marque.
