On a Friday evening in summer, the lawn behind Vintage Grocers at Trancas Country Market fills with camp chairs, a live band, and a good slice of western Malibu. Kids run barefoot on the grass while parents carry out wine and dinner from the deli. For a few hours, the far west end of town has a proper town square. It is easy to forget that this corner once went a couple of years with no grocery at all.
Trancas Country Market sits at 30745 Pacific Coast Highway, where Trancas Canyon Road meets PCH, at the edge of Zuma Beach as Malibu narrows toward Broad Beach. It is a low, barn-style cluster of wood buildings on a 17-acre site next to Trancas Creek, anchored by a full grocery and ringed by cafes, a surf shop, boutiques, and a yoga studio. Out here, where homes spread across canyons and beachfront a long way from central Malibu, it has quietly become the everyday gathering spot. It is where you actually run into your neighbors.
A Roadhouse Called Trancas
There has been something called Trancas on this property since the late 1930s, when it started as a roadside restaurant. By the late 1980s it had become a roadhouse, a small club that held about 200 people and booked a surprising run of talent. The Los Angeles Times counted Carole King, Bo Diddley, John Mayall, and Dr. John on its stage, with Bonnie Raitt and Bob Seger dropping in, and Bruce Springsteen and Sylvester Stallone among the patrons. Surf-guitar king Dick Dale played the room regularly, right up until the club closed in the early 1990s.
That scrappy music-bar era is a long way from today's polished center, but the name carried over, and a few longtime locals still talk about the shows.
How Vintage Grocers Ended Western Malibu's Grocery Gap
For a stretch, buying food out here meant a real drive. The grocery that had anchored this corner for years, HOWS Market, closed at the end of summer 2011, and the west end of Malibu lost its only full-service option. Residents had to head down toward Point Dume or up into the valley for basics. "It's very important that you don't have to get in your car and drive five miles for a cup of sugar," then-Malibu mayor Joan House said when the fix finally arrived.
That fix was a full rebuild. Financed by Walton family heiress Paige Laurie, the property was redeveloped into four new wood-frame buildings with fresh parking and its own on-site wastewater treatment, tucked against the creek. Vintage Grocers, the new anchor, opened in March 2014, the first full grocery the west end had seen in about two and a half years.
A place to buy dinner is a small thing until you do not have one. Getting it back is what turned this corner into a center of gravity again.
What You'll Find at Trancas Country Market Today
Vintage Grocers still anchors the property, part market and part deli, with a coffee bar and prepared food that make it as much a meeting spot as a place to shop. Around it sit Drill Surf & Skate for boards and beach gear, the Malibu Brewing Company taproom, a Starbucks, Malibu Music Co., a couple of boutiques in Sea Lily and Nati, Sweet Bu Candy for the kids, Trancas Canyon Nursery, Glo Yoga, and the practical everyday stops: a postal annex, a dry cleaner, and a Chevron on the corner.
The summer highlight is Trancas Summer Nights, a free live-music series on the market lawn on Friday evenings from late May into early September, presented by Vintage Grocers. Bring a chair, grab dinner from the deli, and you have the closest thing this end of Malibu has to a weekly block party.
