There are many beaches in Malibu, and it may be difficult to plan your outing with so many choices. Although all beaches in Malibu are stunning, some have rocky shorelines and can be difficult to access. That’s why we have only included the best sandy beaches in Malibu to provide you with the top options when planning your beach day. If you are interested in beaches with the best surf spots, you can check out our article here.

This list will be organized from east to west through Malibu. So, without further ado, here is our list of Malibu’s all-time best sandy beaches.

Topanga State Beach

Topanga State Beach

Sand: Topanga Beach has a mix of sandy and rocky areas and may have less sand compared to other beaches on this list, but there is still plenty of soft shoreline to set up your beach camp for the day.
Vibe: Relaxed atmosphere, famous for its hippie vibes and surf culture. Offers great views of both L.A. and the western Malibu shoreline. If you’re coming from L.A., this is a must-visit spot due to its proximity to the city. On clear days, you can also enjoy views of Catalina Island.
Parking and Access: There are two paid parking lots with plenty of spaces available. Prices usually range from $3-$10 depending on the season. The beach is also easily accessible from the PCH.

Surfrider Beach

Surfrider

Sand: There is more sand here than at Topanga Beach. Surfrider Beach is longer and wider, though there are still some rocky areas. The best sandy spot is in front of the parking lot next to the stone wall. The sand stretches west along the beach, but the shallower waters in the western section tend to be rockier than on the eastern side.

Vibe: This is the quintessential Malibu beach spot. Surfrider is a great place to experience the most iconic aspects of Malibu culture and lifestyle. It’s a prime people-watching location, as many of Malibu’s dedicated surfers camp out here to enjoy the long, peeling right-handers. The classic Malibu hippie scene from the 1960s and '70s is also well preserved here, so you’ll find plenty of eclectic characters. The views are some of the best on this list, with a central vantage point of all of Malibu, complemented by the Malibu Pier, making it a picture-perfect location. Shopping and dining options are available just across the PCH and at the Malibu Pier.

Parking and Access: There are four parking options:The main parking lot next to the rock wall by the beach.
The pier parking lot, a short walk to the beach.
Street parking along the PCH.
Parking near the lagoon by the stoplight at Cross Creek shopping center, offering a scenic walk to the beach.

Additional Information:Surfrider Beach is located next to one of California’s most well-preserved lagoons, making it a great spot for birdwatching and observing unique lagoon fauna.
Malibu’s best shopping center, Cross Creek, is within walking distance.

Dan Blocker Beach

Dan Blocker Beach

Sand: Dan Blocker Beach has the least amount of sand on this list, with conditions varying depending on the tide. It is much rockier than other beaches, but when conditions are good, it offers a truly private experience.

Vibe: One of Malibu’s lesser-known beaches, offering more privacy and an intimate beach experience. A great bonus is the nearby Malibu Seafood Restaurant, a local favorite. Pick up lunch or dinner and enjoy a perfect sunset (I highly recommend the ahi tuna burger!).

Parking and Access: Street parking is available along the PCH, and there are usually spots available.

Paradise Cove

Paradise Cove

Sand: This is a slightly smaller beach, but it has plenty of sand. Beach chairs and cabanas are available for rent.

Vibe: Located next to the famous Paradise Cove Café, offering delicious food and drinks. The views are some of the best on this list, as the beach is in a sheltered cove surrounded by beautiful sandstone bluffs. A beach walk is highly recommended—you’ll find secluded private coves just a short walk west. This is a great location for families and larger groups, though it can get very crowded in the summer.

Parking and Access:On-site parking is available for a fee, with validation possible if dining at the restaurant. Free parking is available on the PCH, but expect a short walk to the beach.
Parking can become difficult during the summer months due to this beach's popularity.

Big Dume Beach

Big Dume

Sand: Sand levels vary depending on the tide. It is rockier than other beaches, but you can usually find a sandy spot to set up. It’s also the best beach for exploring tide pools at low tide.

Vibe: This beach is the most private and secluded on this list. Situated in a large cove, it offers plenty of space to escape the crowds. It is a less popular location due to its hidden access and lower sand levels, but that’s what makes it special. If you’re looking for the best views, this beach is at the top of the list.

Parking and Access: Parking is very limited. The closest lot is a narrow pull-off next to the trail leading down the bluff to the stairs.
If the pull-off is full, additional parking is available on Grasswood, but expect about a 10-minute walk to the beach. A moderate flight of steep stairs is required to reach the shoreline.

Point Dume State Beach

Westward Beach

Sand: Large swaths of sand make finding a spot easy. This beach, along with neighboring Zuma and Westward Beaches, offers the sandiest shores in Malibu.

Vibe: Easternmost stretch of Malibu’s sandiest beaches, featuring beautiful cliffs and more privacy than other sandy beaches. If you’re looking for a classic beach feel with a bit more seclusion, this is a great spot.

Parking and Access: A parking lot with plenty of spaces is directly adjacent to the beach.
Parking is often free in winter but requires a small fee in summer.

Westward Beach

Westward

Sand: Long and wide sandy shoreline, comparable to Point Dume State Beach and Zuma Beach.

Vibe: One of the best beaches for body surfing. The shoreline drops off quickly, allowing people to catch waves safely without wading too far out. Also home to The Sunset Restaurant, one of Malibu’s most famous restaurants with unparalleled ocean views—great for dates and couples.

Parking and Access: Roadside parking is available directly next to the shoreline.
Parking can get tight, especially during peak hours in summer.

Zuma Beach

Zuma Beach

Sand: #1 for sand. The largest beach in Malibu with the most sand year-round.

Vibe: If you could visit just one beach in Malibu, Zuma Beach is the best choice. It offers the ultimate beach experience. Although it can get crowded, the beach is so big that you’ll always find a spot. Multiple lifeguard towers make it a safe choice, and it’s great for large groups and picnics.

Parking and Access: Paid parking is available next to the beach.
Free parking is available along the PCH, with a comparable walking distance.

Broad Beach

Broad Beach

Sand: Slightly less sand than Zuma, Westward, and Point Dume, but on a medium to low tide, you’ll always find a spot.

Vibe: Best beach in Malibu for long walks. It’s less crowded than Zuma and offers views of some of Malibu’s most luxurious beachfront homes. Many locals secretly bring their dogs here, though it's not officially permitted.

Parking and Access: Street parking is available along Broad Beach Road. Beach access points can be hidden between homes, so drive slowly and keep an eye out for them.

El Matador Beach

El Matador

Sand: This beach has significantly less sand compared to others on the list, but it is one of the most breathtaking beaches in Malibu.

Vibe: El Matador is known for its stunning beauty and dramatic sea stacks, which cast shadows over the sand and surf. A favorite spot for photographers, it features rock arches, caves, and striking coastal scenery that are best explored at low tide. This is one of Malibu’s most picturesque and secluded beaches, and arguably its most beautiful. Since it’s not as well-known among tourists, it remains relatively quiet.

Parking and Access: There is a well-signed parking lot perched on a bluff with ocean-view picnic tables. It fills up quickly on weekends, so arriving early is recommended.
A scenic trail descends through unique rock formations before stairs lead to the shore, offering breathtaking views along the way.

Leo Carrillo State Beach

Leo Carillo

Sand: Sand levels are moderate to low depending on the tide. This beach is rockier than others, but there are still plenty of sandy spots at lower tides.

Vibe: Famous for tide pools, sea caves, and beautiful rock formations. While the waves here attract surfers, families also enjoy the calmer tide pools. The views are excellent, and it offers a peaceful escape from the city with minimal crowds.Camping: One of Malibu’s only beachfront campgrounds is located here, offering a unique overnight beach experience. The campground is accessible without crossing the PCH. Dogs are allowed on-leash, making this one of the few pet-friendly beaches in Malibu.

Parking and Access: A paid parking lot is available near the entrance.
Free parking is available along the PCH, though it may require a short walk.
